Frequently Asked Questions
UHN is building a new surgical and patient tower on the campus of Toronto Western Hospital as part of the revitalization of the hospital that has served the Kensington community and patients from across Toronto and the province for more than 100 years. With 82 net new beds and state-of-the-art surgical suites and technology, the tower will improve the patient experience and the working environment for the talented and dedicated healthcare teams who provide outstanding care.
Remarkable work happens at Toronto Western Hospital (TWH), but the infrastructure doesn’t always provide a modern and supportive work environment. With parts of TWH more than 100 years old, the need to improve the existing ORs is clear – and renovation is not the best option. A new building creates the opportunity for net new patient beds, more efficient and safe patient flows and better patient and family experiences.
The tower will be 15 stories high, with 11 floors reserved for patient care and the remaining for mechanical and design purposes.
Construction is expected to be complete in late 2028. All timelines are subject to change.
The tower will have 82 net new inpatient beds, which includes 16 ICU beds.
The new patient and surgical tower will improve patient and clinic workflows and provide 82 new patient beds. All inpatient rooms will be built as private rooms with single washrooms. Every room will have large windows that provide natural light, a monitor for patient information and entertainment, enough outlets for patient and clinical needs, and ample space for multiple visitors.
There will also be 20 new state-of-the-art Operating Rooms (ORs) and the tower will be positioned for future pandemics and emergent needs, ensuring UHN is equipped to deliver tomorrow’s care.
While all construction will be maintained on UHN property, road closures, dust and some noise are to be expected and may impact the hospital’s neighbours.
All construction will be conducted in compliance with Chapter 591 City of Toronto Municipal Code for Noise and Lights and will meet jurisdiction requirements.
An engineering firm will also monitor vibration at regular intervals throughout shoring and excavation.
Since March 2021, UHN has engaged with Toronto Western Hospital’s surrounding community from Kensington Market to build awareness of this project and the need for enhanced services within the area.
UHN continues to engage with the community, alongside the local Councillor’s office (Ward 11 University – Rosedale Councillor Dianne Saxe) and is inspired and energized by the community support received so far. We look forward to continuing this work to build a healthier community – and A Healthier World.
